Win Two Free Tickets to The Boulder International Film Festival

Want to attend the Boulder International Film Festival?
La Ishá Natural & Organic Skincare is giving away 2 free tickets to the screening of Pink Ribbons, a film that examines “pinkwashing”, a phenomenon that marketing experts have labeled a “dream cause”. It dares to ask where the millions of dollars raised in the name of breast cancer actually go, what it achieves and what happens when a company engages in pinkwashing.

This film recently celebrated its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was named one of the top 10 films of the year.
To see the trailer, click on this link, then scroll through the previews and click on Pink Ribbons:

To enter our giveaway, send an email with your name, email address, and phone number to La.Isha.2006@gmail.com. Winners will be randomly selected early Friday morning, February 17th and notified via email by 12 noon.

Pink Ribbons will debut this Saturday at the Boulder International Film Festival, and be shown at the First Methodist Church at 12:15 in downtown Boulder.

Just Between Us Girls...
an editorial

Women do so much for others, whether functioning as single moms, or being primary caregivers for our parents, spouses, significant others, friends and extended families...While we are blessed with the ability to multitask and juggle our responsibilities, many of us routinely put the needs of loved ones' ahead of our own, submerging dreams and desires, and ultimately losing ourselves in the process. Years of stress and self-neglect can leave a woman feeling depleted and resentful.

If you can relate to this, then developing a good relationship with yourself is the first step toward re-discovering who you are and rekindling a love and respect for yourself as a person.

My grandmother, Baba, whom I adored, passed on years ago, but so many of her words of wisdom still resonate in my head as if she was standing at my side today. I remember her telling me once to be sure to feed myself before sitting down to nurse my children. She called it the unselfish act of "making a mother", explaining that it was critical for me to take care of myself first, in order to be able to fully meet the needs of my children. If you are running on empty and have nothing left to give, you cannot be helpful to others. I am reminded of this every time I get on an airplane, and hear the flight attendants instruct the passengers in case of emergency to put their oxygen masks on themselves before putting them on their children.

Setting aside time to take care of yourself is not only important, but a true necessity we can ill afford to ignore these days. Getting relief from the fast, hectic pace of stressful day to day living is critical to maintaining good health. Small indulgences can take many forms and make the difference between feeling fried and depressed, or energized and optimistic. Whether you choose to focus on physically, emotionally or spiritually nourishing activities, studies show that that the act of carving out time for yourself results in measurable improvements in our own health as well as the well-being of everyone around us. Remember the adage: "If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" Truer words have never been spoken.

Nurturing your spirit is a wonderful way to maintain sanity, preserve good health, prevent premature aging, and make yourself look and feel good all over. We're curious to see what you do when you need to get a break, unwind or simply pamper yourself. Would you mind sharing?

Send us an email with a short description of what works for you, and let us know how often you do it (i.e. never, once a month, once a week, once a year, every day, etc.) and we'll share some of our favorite responses in next month's newsletter.

Remember: "Love yourself first and everything falls into line." ~ Lucille Ball

3 Baby Steps to Help You Fall in Love With Yourself!

"To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness." ---Robert Morely

Valentine's Day is coming up on the 14th - a time when many of us reminisce nostalgically about "the one that got away" and think about finding perfect love. One thing we often overlook during this reverie is the fact that loving ourselves is a pre-requisite for developing a healthy, loving relationship with anyone else.

Have you neglected yourself for so long that you don't know where to begin? Here are three baby steps you can take to start the process of loving yourself better. They may feel alien and uncomfortable at first, but try doing them for 40 days in a row, and they are sure to become a habit that will help create a more positive, confident you.

1. Don't be too hard on yourself. We all like to get things right all of the time, but we're only human. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Laugh at yourself. Don't take yourself so seriously. You'll go to bed at the end of the day feeling a lot lighter and sleep a lot better.
2. Take a deep breath. Worry and anxiety are natural parts of life, and serve the very useful purpose of lighting a fire under you when you need to get going. But living with a constant sense of worry and doubt is bad for your heart, your head, your skin, and just about everything else in your body. When you start to feel yourself freaking out, take a few deep breaths. This simple act can do wonders.
3. Give and Accept Compliments. Try to compliment someone every day. It never hurts to let people know that they're acknowledged and appreciated, and learning to see the beauty in others can help you recognize the beauty in yourself. When someone compliments you, don't try to brush it off and dismiss it. Accept it graciously and take it to heart.

Here's the sobering bottom line: You are your own life partner. Even if you are married or in a relationship with someone else, remember that you spend every minute of every single day of your life with yourself. Why not get comfortable with your true soul-mate? Make the conscious decision to love yourself. You won't regret it!

Winter Skin Care Part II

Have you noticed that when the temperature outside drops, so does the level of humidity in the air? Compound this with the drying effects of forced heat and reduced exposure to sunlight (lowered Vitamin D levels), and you have the makings of a winter skin disaster!
What can you do to avoid drying out like a prune? In my last post, I talked about limiting exposure to hot water during bathing, staying away from harsh soaps, and steering clear of skin products that contain high alcohol content. I also stressed the importance of regular exfoliation, and using a cream or moisturizer on damp skin as soon as you get out of the shower in order to trap moisture close to the skin. This time let’s talk about beauty from the inside out.
Foods and beverages can have a direct effect on the health and appearance of your skin. Knowing what to avoid, and conversely, what to eat can dramatically improve your looks naturally without breaking the bank.
1. Coffee. Are you a coffee drinker? While topically applied caffeine has value in cosmetics because it can minimize facial flushing and potentially decrease the appearance of rosacea, ingesting it is a different story entirely. Did you know that caffeine can rob your body of moisture (and minerals)? It is what’s known as a diuretic, which increases urine output from the body, and can lead to dehydration and – you guessed it - dry skin. Try to drink more caffeine-free fluids in the winter, including water, fruit juice, and herbal teas. Experts suggest that you drink 2 cups of water for each cup of caffeinated beverage you ingest in order to make up for the water loss induced by the caffeine.
2. Increase your intake of foods that are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. These essential fats are actually good for your body! How? They strengthen cell membranes and help hold precious moisture in, which in turn plumps up your skin and helps decrease the appearance of wrinkles. Foods that are high in omega-3s include avocados, salmon, tuna, trout, flaxseed, and walnuts.
3. Foods Rich in Vitamin A are instrumental in the growth and repair of body tissues and may even help protect against sun damage. Be sure to enjoy these antioxidant-rich foods: orange and red-colored fruits and veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkins, apricots, watermelon, red bell peppers and mango, as well as leafy greens, cabbage and watercress.
4. You already know that a lack of Vitamin C can cause scurvy, but did you know that it can also contribute to rough, dry skin? Vitamin C is critical in the formation of collagen, which is the main component of connective tissue. It fights free radicals (which are thought to be responsible for premature aging), and heals wounds by helping in the formation of scar tissue. The body is not able to make vitamin C on its own, and cannot store it long term, so be sure to replenish your stock of this important nutrient by eating citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, spinach and brussel sprouts.
5. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps repair and protect the skin from free radicals. Try getting your Vitamin E naturally from foods like nuts and seeds, avocados, wheat germ, flaxseed oil, dark leafy greens (like collards, Swiss chard and spinach), and broccoli.
6. A Deficiency in Vit B-6 and Niacin can manifest in cracked, dry skin, especially around your mouth. Remedy this by adding avocado, banana, legumes, whole grains, broccoli, bok choy, green pepper, sweet potato, meat, fish and poultry to your diet.
7. Eat More Foods Containing Zinc. Zinc is helpful in repairing dry, cracked skin. It protects cell membranes, maintains collagen (which is essential in keeping skin firm and resilient), and plays an important role in skin renewal. Foods that contain zinc include oysters, beans, turkey, lean beef, nuts and seeds, reduced fat cheese, nonfat milk, low fat yogurt, lentils and peas.
8. Dr. Oz recommends Niacin for better-looking, healthy skin. Niacin is used as a treatment for a variety of skin issues, and is effective in improving circulation. Eating niacin-rich foods like eggs, poultry, fish, meat, cereals and nuts can help prevent cracked, scaly skin, canker sores and eczema - a skin condition characterized by crusty, dry, red, itchy, flaky skin.

Watching your diet and making sure you supply your body with nutrient rich foods that reduce inflammation and protect cell membranes is the fastest, and most economical way to beautiful, healthy skin! Eat up and enjoy!

A Quick Primer in Dry Skin Basics: How to Win the War Against Dry Skin!

Do you suffer from dry skin? Is it red and flaky; tight and painful? Does it crack and bleed in the winter? Worst of all: Does it itch and keep you awake at night?
Dry skin that goes unchecked is more than uncomfortable: it can actually lead to more serious health problems. The skin is not only the largest organ in the body, it is our primary defense against outside infection. When this external barrier is compromised, all kinds of intruders can get in and wreak havoc with our health.

What makes skin dry out?
- Harsh soaps
- Some medications
- Medical conditions like hypothyroidism and diabetes
- Toners, creams and moisturizers that contain a high level of alcohol and perfume
- Indoor heating/air-conditioning
- Cold, windy weather
- Over-exposure to the sun
- Prolonged exposure to long, hot baths/showers

What Can You Do to Win the War Against Dry Skin?
1. Start with a Cleanser that does not strip away your body’s natural oils. We recommend La Ishá’s Gentle Aromatherapy Face Wash, to remove makeup and environmental impurities without irritating your skin or drying it out. Use lukewarm water to rinse. Pat dry.

2. Use an Exfoliant to Remove Dead Skin!
Dead skin can give your skin an ashy, dull appearance. La Ishá’s Orange Coconut Skin Polish is the only exfoliant we know of that actually infuses hydration into your skin, and is gentle enough to use under your eyes and on tender lips! Plus it smells good enough to eat! Exfoliation will enhance your skin’s ability to absorb new moisture.

3. Next: Follow up with a really good moisturizer!
The purpose of using a moisturizer is to create a barrier against the elements and keep moisture locked in. Avoid products that contain alcohol, as they tend to be drying. Use a natural oil-based cream formula to quench dry skin (La Ishá’s Nutrient Rich Face Creme is exceptionally emollient and healing!) and be sure to stay away from harmful ingredients like mineral oil that can have exactly the opposite effect that you want. A cheap byproduct of crude oil distillation, mineral oil not only dries out your skin but can cause increased acne and clogged pores. If you keep up with current research you know that petroleum derivatives have also been implicated in the development of various cancers and health problems.
Make sure to apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp!
This way it will trap in the moisture that is still on the surface of your skin. Allow the cream to soak in for a few minutes before getting dressed. Your skin should stay moist and protected for hours!
